Deadline: 12 midday on May 11, 2011

Would you like the opportunity to get involved in setting the direction of a national youth-led charity and representing its members’ interests?

Can you be a passionate advocate of the British Youth Council’s vision, that young people across the UK will have a say and be heard?

Are you aged 16-25? Why not become a trustee/director of the British Youth Council?

BYC is led by young people for young people, aged 25 and under, across the UK - young people themselves set the direction of the organisation and contribute to our strategic development. Young people are also involved in the development of our activities and are our spokespeople for communications with the media. We have several young volunteers based at our office in London who empower other young people through training and support them to join our campaigns.

As a trustee, you will need to be able to put the interests of BYC before any personal interests or links you have. You will need to have time to attend weekend Board meetings (5/6 a year) and act as an ambassador at other times. It’s a big time commitment but has big rewards; you will gain valuable experience and networks and your expenses will be covered for any work you undertake. You role will involve thinking carefully about the choices BYC makes and the range of activities, programmes and campaigns it undertakes and how it prepares and plans for the future. This doesn’t mean you’ll be involved in the day-to-day running of the organisation however.

Your role will be to take a step back and look at the road ahead, thinking about future challenges and opportunities to ensure that BYC responds to the views and needs of all young people and to help empower them to have a say and be heard.

The board consists of thirteen young people (four Officers and nine Ordinary Members). Officers serve for a one-year term of office, while Ordinary Members serve a two-year term of office. (Occasionally there will be a vacancy for a one year term)

The application pack, application form and reference form are all available to download. For further information or questions please contact Jack at

Please note: You must be under 26 on the day of election, which is Saturday 3rd September 2011.

Application forms can be downloaded from here under the “Trustee Recruitment Docs” tab.
